Fern graduated from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana with a B.A. in the Teaching of English (for grades 6–12). She subsequently enrolled in the Master of Social Work program at the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana. After receiving her M.S.W., she became a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and later went on to receive her Master's in Teaching Students with Learning Disabilities at Northeastern University. She spent the next 15 years providing counseling and conducting evaluations for students ages 3–21 in the Chicago public school system.
In 2000, Fern moved to Houston, Texas. Soon after her arrival, she worked as the Education Specialist for the Emery-Weiner School. She then worked at Condit Elementary School as a Special Education Teacher and Chairperson; School Counselor and Testing Coordinator; Intervention Assistance Team Chairperson; teacher of students with autism; and 504 Chairperson. During this time, she completed the Basic Language Skills Course in remediated reading, writing, and spelling at the Neuhaus Education Center.
Outside of school and work, Fern dedicated four years to earning her professional culinary, baking, and pastry credentials. She loves to bake, play piano, travel, learn foreign languages, and spend time with family and friends.
