John grew up in Pittsburgh and was a National Merit Finalist at Peabody High School. He carried on a family tradition as a fourth-generation student at Oberlin College, where he graduated with a B.A. in English and Religion. He then received an MTS. from Harvard Divinity School and a Ph.D. in English at New York University. His Ph.D. dissertation focused on 18th-century British poetry, particularly Alexander Pope’s Dunciad. While at NYU, John taught undergraduate courses in English and Expository Writing.
John takes pride in his dedication to providing educational opportunities to students of all backgrounds. He is a former board member, governance committee chair, and board chair of Leadership Enterprise for a Diverse America (LEDA), and he organizes the SAT and ACT tutoring that Advantage Testing provides annually for 100 students at LEDA’s Summer Institute, hosted by Princeton and Yale Universities. John has tutored LEDA Scholars for standardized tests for nearly two decades.
