Michael Rutherglen in Silicon Valley

Michael earned a B.A. with Highest Distinction in English Language and Literature from the University of Virginia, an MFA in Poetry from the University of Iowa Writers’ Workshop, where he was a Maytag Fellow and then a Teaching-Writing Fellow, and an M.A. in the Humanities from the University of Chicago. In 2026, he will receive his Ph.D. from the Committee on Social Thought at the University of Chicago.

Before joining Advantage, Michael taught creative writing, composition, and English and American literature at a number of universities, including James Madison University, the University of Iowa, and the University of Chicago. His poetry is published widely and has won him a Ruth-Lilly Fellowship from the Poetry Foundation, a Dorothy Sargent Rosenberg Memorial Prize, and residencies from the Corporation of Yaddo, The Norman Mailer Writers’ Colony, and the Berkshire Taconic Foundation/Amy Clampitt Fund.
