Courtney received her B.A., Phi Beta Kappa, in Political Science from Stanford University and her J.D. from Stanford Law School, where she was her class's graduation speaker. At Stanford Law, Courtney received several book prizes for her academic performance and served as Co-Editor-in-Chief of the school's Journal of Complex Litigation. She was a semi-finalist in the school's Kirkwood Moot Court Competition, where she and her partner received the award for Best Non-Finalist Respondent's Brief and placed as a top-eight team at the national level of the Texas Young Lawyers Association's Mock Trial tournament. Prior to pivoting to focus on more creative endeavors in writing, Courtney was a litigation associate at the law firm of O'Melveny & Myers LLP and a policy associate at a nonprofit focused on criminal legal reform. Courtney remains on active status with the California Bar and continues to organize and volunteer with local racial justice coalitions JusticeLA and White People 4 Black Lives.
