Christian has a Bachelor's degree from Stanford University, where he studied Biology and Statistics, and an M.S. from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in San Diego, where he studied Marine Biology. He has also completed postgraduate work at Harvard University. He is a published poet and essayist who has authored 14 peer-reviewed science articles that collectively have been cited over 1,000 times. He has also programmed games for PC and Nintendo and analytic software that has been used in peer-reviewed studies on all seven continents. He was a volunteer Spanish-speaking missionary for two years, and he is a life-long distance runner, pianist, and scuba diver. Christian has lectured internationally in Bayesian statistical methods and genetic inference and worked at the San Pedro Marine Mammal Care center rescuing seals and sea lions. As a graduate student, Christian won a departmental award for TA-ing an advanced course in biological stochasticity, and he helped 30 adult Spanish speakers prepare to take the GED, all of whom passed.
