In this series of workshops, students will learn how to approach any work of art with confidence—even excitement! Art History offers us the opportunity not only to delve into the beautiful, moving, and sometimes strange cultural artifacts of the world but also to learn a whole new method of historical interpretation. Students have previously examined documents as a primary method of understanding history, so comprehending historical events and trends through different primary sources might seem daunting. Our objective in this course is to help students see that works of art can tell us so much of what we need to know—if we know where and how to look. Students will learn how to utilize critical Art History terms as they become confident in their abilities to describe and analyze works of art. Working with images essential to advanced courses and practicing responding to prompts they’ll encounter throughout the year, students will leave this course ready to engage adeptly with the world’s great works of art.
