Medical Tutoring & Mentoring

What Kind of Preparation do you Offer?

We offer instruction and advice throughout the complex process of medical training. In medical school and residency, students and physicians-in-training need to absorb a considerable quantity of information in a short period. Beyond acquiring the necessary fund of knowledge, they must learn to negotiate a range of sometimes unfamiliar terrains—from developing an appropriate bedside manner with patients and their families, to understanding and excelling at the protocols and routines involved in becoming a reliable and crucial part of a medical team. Career decisions can also be challenging; after only one year of clinical experience, most students are faced with choosing the specialty that they will likely pursue for the rest of their professional careers.

Medical students—and later, residents—typically meet challenges that arise in medical training by gleaning what advice and recommendations they can from upperclassmen and others with greater experience. Students also learn through completing required and elective rotations, and sometimes through the advice of an assigned student or faculty mentor. Basic science and clinical attending faculty are available to assist with areas of difficulty for students or resident physicians. However, time constraints and the public settings where medical education often takes place can make it challenging to take full advantage of these resources. Additional preparation, instruction, review, and advice can provide useful supplements for students and residents facing medicine's academic and professional challenges.

General Content of Program

The resources available at most medical schools and residency training programs are an invaluable, primary source of information and assistance for students and physicians-in-training. As a supplement to those programs, we offer private mentoring to medical students and resident physicians. Our program offers a unique alternative resource in a completely confidential setting – with a physician mentor who is entirely outside the training institution or evaluation process. (Please note that we will not provide consultation for residents on individual, active medical cases.) A private physician mentor has the opportunity to work with the student or physician-in-training in an open, comfortable, focused environment. In turn, the student can learn to master content areas, or to make progress in professional development, with ever-increasing knowledge, confidence, and success.

What Does the Program Cover?

Our tutoring and mentoring programs can address every stage of medical training, including:

  • Basic science and clinical rotation knowledge
  • Preparation for beginning clinical rotations and acting internships
  • Approaches to clarifying career choice priorities and options
  • The range of topics and concerns that arise during medical training

What is the Schedule?

Tutoring or mentoring sessions can be scheduled at the convenience of the student or resident, decreasing the logistical challenges of fitting yet another appointment into an already overburdened schedule. We design a program responsive to the individual student's needs.
